Centroamérica es el resultado de complejos procesos geológicos que han influenciado la biodiversidad, terrestre, dulceacuícola y marina. Recientemente se han documentado 622 especies de peces de agua dulce, con 193 species endémicas para la regíon. Los desafíos para proteger y mantener esta biodiversidad son altos y actualmente 91 especies se encuentran en Peligro Crítico, en Peligro o Vulnerables a extinción. Tres factores determinantes en la supervivencia de estas especies son la contaminación de los cuerpos de agua dulce, el uso de recursos hídricos en agricultura y acuicultura y otros usos determinados a factores humanos como la tala de los bosques que disminuye el caudal de los ríos y el hábitat para los peces… increible ¿verdad?. La pregunta fundamental ahora es: ¿podemos cambiar nuestra forma de vida para proteger a nuestros peces? ¿podemos abandonar un enfoque antropocéntrico y comenzar valorar a las especies de peces y otros organismos como iguales?.

Central america freshwater fishes
Central America is the result of complex geological processes that have influenced terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity. Recently 622 freshwater species have been recorded, 193 endemic for the region. The challengues to protect and keep this biodiveristy are strong and currently 91 species are Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable to extinction. Three factors that threat the survival of these species are freshwater pollution, agriculture and aquaculture and the use of other resources for human activities such as logging tropical forests to obtain wood and other resources because that reduce the river flow and destroys or reduces the habitat of many fish… Unbelievable, isn´t it?. The core question is: Can we change our life style to protect our fish? Can we abandon our anthropocentric view and start appreaciating fish species and other species as equals?
